Victorian Snake Jewellery

There are many styles of bangles, rings and other jewellery available to buy online today, but not many of them are steeped in as much tradition as the coiled snake.

Some people are attracted to the mythic archetypal style that represents time and eternity more often than not when the tail is being eaten by the head. This image is the Ouroboros, an ancient symbol showing a serpent eating its own tail. The symbol is believed to have been inspired by the Milky Way with ancient writings describing a serpent of light living amongst the heavens.

Although the images of Cleopatra, Greek and Roman Goddess's wearing Snake Bangles and Snake Chokers can be remembered from the Old 'epic' films, it was the Victorians who popularised the wearing of such Jewellery.

Sapphire Jewellery in White Gold

Sapphire translates from the ancient word for blue, but Sapphire Jewellery is to be found in many different colours and shades. Sapphires are often referred to the 'gem of the heavens' or 'celestial gem', and are thought to provide sincerity, truth and faith. They give peace, wisdom and joy. Only diamonds are harder on the Moh's scale, and therefore Sapphires and Diamonds provide an excellent partnership.

Sapphire is the gemstone for September, Zodiac stone of Taurus, and used to celebrate all 5th, 45th and 70th anniversaries.

Peridot Rings from Nuttalls of Chester

The Ancient Egyptions called Peridot the 'gem of the sun' and the Romans knew it as 'evening emerald' and they often mistaken it as being such. The Hawaiians thought it to be the Goddess Peles' tears. Pirates used it to keep evil spirits at bay at sea, and in a cure for asthma powdered Peridot was often used.

Peridot Jewellery contains Cleopatras' favourite gemstone!

The Peridot gemstone is the birthstone for August and is associated with all 16th anniversaries.

Basic History of Body Jewellery

Body modification is certainly unique to humans and, in one form or another has been practiced for as long as 30000 years.

It is unclear whether the Australian aboriginal, or old tribes of India and Borneo, first began to use it as a way to decorate the body and display a personal fortune. The Greeks and Romans, the Middle and Far East, in fact, the majority of cultures throughout history up to now, all showed characteristics of body art, and perforation. Elizabethan sailors encountered tribes-people who pierce their ears, which they believe will help improve her vision, an attractive proposition to seafarers whose vision was so important. Sailors and explorers also report complex examples of Polynesian tattoos, then remembered by many descendants of sailors in their own skin.

Body piercing is a much more common and accepted way to decorate your body and provides a way to show the individuality of the person.

There is still some summer left - hopefully - so why not show off one of our Beautiful items of Body Jewellery...?
